Does resilience require being vulnerable?
Life as we know it, changed forever. Fortunately for some of us, we found niches that took us into trajectories not imagined before. We were able to reinvent ourselves. Others however, became frozen in fear and tragically, lost so much.
Personally, I had no choice, it was do or die. At 60 years old, I had to learn new skills. Everything went online and the work experience that I had gained over 40 years, seemed irrelevant; everything that I thought I ‘knew’ meant nothing. What I held in fist like control, I had to reluctantly release, which gave into frustration, insecurity and humiliation. Showing up vulnerable was a painful but necessary lesson.
I made it work. I realised that pride and fear were my worst enemies. So, I harnessed my pride and opened myself up to saying “I don’t know”.
The things I have learned:
- Being vulnerable is healthy, yet painful.
- Having a hobby is important.
- Upskilling is possible at any age.
- Resilience often equates reinventing and re-evaluating.
- Resilience keeps us relevant.
- Being vulnerable makes us approachable and open
- Saying yes more often
- Treating life as an adventure
